I've had the honor of collaborating with many gifted artists over the years. Here are some of their thoughts.
Director, Silent Sky
Robin O’Connell served as dramaturg for a production of the play Silent Sky, which I directed at Florida Gulf Coast University. I was impressed by their dedication to the research process for this play, which is based on historical events. They provided the cast and creative team insights into the real people depicted in the play, as well as the social context surrounding the gender norms of the era. Robin is a wonderful collaborator, with an attention to detail, a passion for research, and a contagious enthusiasm that makes working with them a true joy.
Assistant Director, Silent Sky
I had the pleasure of first working with Robin on Lauren Gundeson's play Silent Sky. The show was based in the early 1900s and was based on historical figures. Robin's work was thorough and informative and helped me and our actors take the show to another level and helped me be a more prepared and intentional assistant director. Robin puts an immense amount of care into their work and research and would be a wonderful asset to any production they work on.
Professor of Playwriting
Robin is focused and disciplined and very serious about the crafts of drama. I find Robin’s work to be well-grounded, thoughtful, and thought provoking. They love, no, live for research and it shows. Whether Robin wants to study a play for dramaturgical support or write an original work of their own, they fearlessly dive into the chasm of original source material and emerge with a product that is truly inspirational. I was thrilled at the audience response to a recent reading of Robin’s play Waterlogged. This is a wonderfully crafted tale and I’m excited to see where it will be performed next.
Professor who oversaw the creation of Waterlogged
As a playwright, dramaturg, and actor, Robin O'Connell is a theatre-artist devoted to a deeply intelligent and mindful practice. They are committed to the power and transformation live performance can bring to us all. Whether it's to play selflessly and fully on stage, to celebrate our ephemeral and multiple selves, or to read a text with a piercingly critical eye (and a big heart), Robin is very much the kind of theater artist we need in these rough times.
The Selkie in Waterlogged (Actor)
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with Robin multiple times over the past few years. The time, energy, and passion that they dedicate to their work is unfathomable and completely unmatched. You can easily see their love for their craft shine through in their work each and every time.
Professor overseeing work as research assistant
Robin’s collaborative approach to research is on-point and thorough, helping me to reshape my own scholarly work in the legal and moral codes revealed in folktales. They have also established deep roots in their own studies of banshees in Irish folklore. An insatiable curiosity propels the investigative and connective nature of their explorations and development of their creative portfolio. What a joy to find and work with such a talented young scholar.
