Lauren Gunderson’s Silent Sky is a work of historical fiction exploring the life of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Leavitt discovered the relationship between period and luminosity in Cepheid stars, leading to the ability to calculate the astronomical distance to a star. As female scientists in the 20th century, Leavitt and her colleagues faced significant barriers to their work. Despite the hardships and indignities Leavitt and her colleagues suffered, they made substantial contributions to the field of astronomy. Their work - once forgotten or attributed to their male supervisors - is at last being recognized.
